The role of the Church’s laity has always been glossed over in all church and school histories, especially with regards to its community leaders.  In truth, without the Church’s pre-war Chinese economic elite, the development of education within the Mission would have been greatly hampered. These lay leaders of the Mission, which included the well-to-do, wardens and catechists, had all shared a great concern for the education of the Mission’s children.

The 1860s heralded a new phase of development for the island’s Mission schools.  The clear division of the old Mission grounds between St John’s Institution and Chinese Mission was completed in the mid-1860s when the Christian Brothers took over the properties of the residence of Mission’s Indian schoolteacher and a school for the Mission’s Chinese orphans.  It then became clear that it was imperative for the Chinese (Asiatic) Mission to have its own land and edifice in order that it might secure a more permanent footing in town.[

The idea of the Singapore Church providing education for its Christians dates back to 1835 when Mgr Jean Paul Hilarie Michael Courvezy, Vicar Apostolic (Bishop) of Malaya discovered his Chinese Christians using printed manuscripts to learn to read on their own.  The Bishop tried to help them learn the European alphabet by acquiring for them Portuguese books from Macau.  However, in those early days, the Bishop merely wanted to “teach them enough in order that they could join the singing at mass”, but the Chinese Christians themselves wanted more.

天主教信仰有许多传统和习俗, 其中有些是喜庆和丰富多彩的， 另一些则较庄严， 有的甚至是个人的。许多时候， 当中大多数是几个世纪以来信仰的一部分。有趣的是, 有时候即使是重要的历史活动和教会的纪念, 也会随着时间的流逝而被遗忘。

The Catholic Faith has many traditions and practices, of which, some are festive and colourful while others are more solemn and even personal. And in most cases, most of them had been part of the faith for centuries. Interestingly, sometimes, even important historical activities and observances of the Church end up being forgotten with the passage of time.

“信仰标记”系列之第二篇文章叙述不同修会传教团体早期在新加坡的传教工作；包括为贫困者、残疾人士和赤贫者等服务。当中数个修会团体已经从新加坡撤离，但是他们为各种族和信仰者所提供的援助和安慰的无私精神不该被遗忘。
In retrospect, while the general works of the pioneering missionaries have somewhat been chronicled, most writings have only spoken about their contributions in general terms, and even then, mostly from the institutional perspective; they came, they started schools, homes and ran hospitals…. There’s a lot more acts of love and charity in the history of the Church which still needs to, and could be, told.  

教会的历史是对其信友生活的叙述。事实上，历史中，天主的足迹不仅仅可见于教堂的建筑、堂区组织和我们的神职人员，也通过祂子民的行动看到祂的存在。

The historical account of churches in Singapore often revolve around institutional developments or accounts of founding members and important personalities of the organization. In some ways, many historical accounts of the work of the “people of God” have taken a bureaucratic slant in their narratives. As such, the real story on the ground and the truth about the contribution and sacrifices of the congregation are often glossed over.

圣神堂至今已有56年历史。1960年，北部的人口越来越多，当时新加坡教区孟总主教委任圣母圣心会的石浩德神父(Fr Anthony Schotte)负责筹建一所教堂，地点在汤臣路附近。
石浩德神父早在1958年8月从扎伊尓抵达新加坡，担任当时的王守礼蒙席的秘书。那时，圣母圣心会在新加坡的代表戴保伟神父(Fr Jerome Deblauw)，在卡纳申通道买了一所平房，石神父于1960年搬入。

世界二战的结束带给新加坡教会崭新的成长，注入一股新气象。教友人数增加促使新堂区的建立，以应付各方面的发展需求。因此，50年代，李斯德望神父感到有必要建立一座教堂，牧养住在里峇峇利路、中峇鲁、亚历山大和乌节路一带日益增长的教友群，照顾他们的牧灵需要。

30年代后期，新加坡城市迅速的发展，教友人数与日俱增。因此教会分别在甘榜巴鲁和加东区建造了圣德肋撒堂和圣家堂。当时的圣家堂是欧亚裔人的教堂，而华人仍然要去市区的教堂。初期，加东和直落古楼一带还是漁村，但自从东海岸路于1911年完成后，越来越多的华人搬离市中心，东部成为热门的住宅区和渡假区。再建立多一间圣堂已迫在眉睫，但是适值二战爆发，因此计划便搁置了。

1945年之后，新加坡天主教的教友人数激增。随着政府的土地规划，以及新镇的开拓，教友也分散于岛屿的各处。为牧灵以及更好地服务居住在新加坡各新镇的教友，新堂区也悠然而生。
